What is Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease, which causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood or kidneys. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign invaders. Lupus affects the immune system so that it is unable to distinguish the body’s own cells and tissues from foreign matter. The immune system may attack different parts of the body causing inflammation, injury and/or pain.

Lucy of 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' fame dies

Lucy Vodden, who provided the inspiration for the Beatles' classic song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," has died after a long battle with lupus. She was 46.

Treatments for Lupus

The therapies used in lupus are as varied as the disease itself. Since no two lupus patients are alike, therapy must be custom tailored to the individual’s symptoms. The goal of treatment is to reduce disease activity so as to allow the patient to lead as normal a life as possible.

Diagnosing Lupus

Diagnosing lupus can be difficult. There is no single set of symptoms that is specific for lupus. Many of the lupus symptoms mimic other illnesses, are sometimes vague and may come and go. Currently, there is no single laboratory test that can determine if a person has lupus or not.
